CULTURAL EXCHANGES
CULTURAL EXCHANGES

Every school year a cultural exchange takes place between a class in a public primary school in the Basque Country and another from a public primary school in New York. The idea is to establish a virtual space for sharing experiences. This exchange extends beyond the merely artistic field, given that the students talk about their concerns, their likes, games and any other important aspect of the reality around them. This therefore fulfils yet another objective of the program: to generate interest in other peoples and cities of the world, focusing on the similarities and differences between the lives of a girl or boy at a primary school in New York and in Bilbao.

This time, participants from the Uribarri school, in Bilbao, and from Public School 9 Teunis G. Bergen in New York’s Brooklyn district, wrote to each other by email for a period of six weeks, exchanging information and photographs of their artistic projects, and showing the most characteristic or common features of their respective environments. And in the process they shared “tricks” for creating original self-portraits and compared the Guggenheim Museums in both cities. With this exchange, the students acquired a greater capacity for communication and description, also improving their skills with use of the English language.
