Drawing helps us think. In this final term, we will explore the possibilities of drawing as a tool for perception, and we will see how drawing changes our relationship to the world.
We will begin by analyzing how to use drawing to perceive reality. When we draw, we stop to look at things differently, broadening our view. In this workshop, we will learn to draw the structure of things beyond their appearance, and to draw the images projected by our imagination too.
The results will be surprising and fun. Throughout the course, we will learn a variety of drawing techniques—charcoal, watercolors, markers, etc.—and try them on various mediums.

Third term: from April 21 to May 26
April 21: Drawing and Thinking
How can we make our thoughts and ideas visible? We will try showing what happens inside us, the way we feel, the things we want to happen, by drawing them.
April 28: Seen and Done
We will visit some of the Museum’s galleries to make drawings. Usually, when we go to an exhibition, we just stare at the artworks on display. How does our perception of them change when we look at them and draw?
May 5: Structure and Surface
Looking at the surface of things, we will try to guess what is inside them: What lies behind a cloth? What does the skeleton of a bird look like? What do the walls in a building hide?
May 12: Maps of Imaginary Places
We will design the city we would like to live in, an unknown planet, or just the land that comes out of the tip of our fingers as we draw.
May 19: Unheard-of Associations: Frottage
Frottage (French: “rubbing”) is a technique in which paper or canvas is placed over a grainy surface and rubbed with a crayon or charcoal, thus recreating the texture of a variety of surfaces and objects. With the help of overlapping shapes and weaves, we will create unexpected compositions.
May 26: Looking at Music, Listening to Drawing
Can we make a visual representation of sound and music? Exploring the correspondences between music and drawing, we will see how to express our inner experience by means of strokes and colors.

Explore Your Creativity with Puppy

Other activities

Time to change Puppy’s plants again! We will take Jeff Koons’s giant dog-shaped sculpture as the starting point of our hunt for unconventional materials in art: vegetation, discarded cardboard (as in Robert Rauschenberg’s works), and what not! To celebrate Global Recycling Day (March 18), we will make “natural self-portraits” with recycled cardboard and natural objects such as leaves, twigs, and dirt.
Activity for Museum Members only
Children aged 3-5 must be accompanied by an adult. Both the child and the accompanying adult must have tickets.

Books alive! Art is Everywhere 

An amusing story is the starting point of this activity in English combining reading, creative play, and art. You will discover how art can be everywhere – not just in the galleries of a museum but also on the streets or even at home. Are you ready to find it? You will also be encouraged to explore some of the strategies used by the artists in the Pop Art movement; for instance, taking objects, portraits, paintings, or comic strips out of their original context and transforming them into something new by resorting to intervention, humor, and irony. Are you ready to do the same?

Baby Art: We Are Color

Surrounded by stimuli and playing games that kindle curiosity, babies and their families interact as together they take a look at inspiring works in the Museum’s Collection, like Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time or Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #831. This month, we are offering an immersive workshop exploring colors and structures to find hidden treasures. Baby Art offers a space for exploration, thus awakening and stimulating our senses – sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. In Baby Art, babies play, try things, and create in a magical, open environment.

Family Yoga

Aimed at the whole family, these classes use art and accessible yoga poses to help you attain wellbeing, improve your quality of life, and develop your emotional intelligence. By doing breathing exercises and trying poses inspired by the works of Giovanni Anselmo, kids and the grown-ups with them will learn to relax, focus on their bodies, identify their emotions, and become aware of the world around them. These yoga classes will give them the chance to connect to their creative essence as they explore conscious movement.

The online art courses at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao are accessible yet thorough, offering a unique opportunity to learn about key topics and concepts in the history of modern and contemporary art from a current perspective.
With the participation of experts in each field, the courses take as their starting point the Museum’s collection and its dynamic and varied artistic programming.
For a decade now, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao's Film &amp; Video exhibition programme has examined the different currents and modalities of contemporary artistic practices using film and video media.
Learning outcomes
The learning outcomes of this online course are, among others:

<li>To provide key references that allow you to easily learn the main features of the evolution of moving image in contemporary art and its main ramifications and numerous possibilities.</li>
<li>To present a selection of works and projects based on the Film &amp; Video exhibition history.</li>

Online art courses Drawing in Contemporary Art

General Public

The online art courses of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao offer accessible yet rigorous training in key concepts and topics in the history of modern and contemporary art, addressed from current perspectives. Drawing on the contributions from experts in specific fields, these courses are inspired by the Museum’s Collection and its dynamic exhibition program.
Drawing was the first form of artistic representation used by man to communicate or convey ideas. Its development has followed the evolution of history and art since its emergence as such in the sixteenth century.
Moreover, a drawing, either on paper or in the mind, is often the starting point of the creative process for many artists – a sort of “skeleton” of their work. And many drawings have come to be considered as works of art in their own right, given their complexity, their uniqueness, or the skill with which they were drafted. Many artists in the old days were celebrated for their dexterity in the mastery of this technique, which continues to be a fundamental discipline in contemporary art.
Objectives 
This online course is aimed at:
<ul>
<li>Offering an overview of the history of drawing, illustrating it with pieces from the old masters, particularly Francisco de Goya, as a predecessor of contemporary drawing.</li>
<li>Reviewing non-Western drawing practices with an influence on contemporary drawing.</li>
<li>Highlighting the importance of drawing, both as a technique and as an independent discipline.</li>
<li>Illustrating all of the above with a selection of works from the Museum Collection that show the key role played by drawing in artists’ creative processes and accomplished works of art.</li>

Availability 
The course will be available online for three months. Students will be able to access the course wherever they are, progressing at their own pace. Upon completing a module, they will be able to move on to the next one.
Target audience 
People over 18 who are interested in broadening or updating their knowledge of modern and contemporary art or getting a few key references on this topic. No prior knowledge required. Members of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Community will have priority over other applicants to access the 50 places available.

Wellbeing Tours: Slow Looking [18+]

As part of the new program launched by the Museum, Wellbeing through Art, Slow Looking offers visitors the chance to look at the art collections slowly and carefully, savoring the moment. In a guided tour of some of the works in the Museum’s Collection, Slow Looking delivers a mindful experience in which participants do breathing and meditation exercises to enhance their connection to art, as well as their sense of wellbeing and peace of mind.

Opera screenings: Teatro Real Archive

On stage

In May, another production from the superb Teatro Real Archive will be screened at the Museum. This time, it will be Il turco in Italia, an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868), with a libretto in Italian written by Felice Romani, which is in fact a re-working of a libretto by Caterino Mazzolà. Il turco in Italia was first performed in La Scala, Milan, on August 14, 1814.

Architecture Lab III

In the third term of our Architecture Lab III, we will discuss urban networks, both visible and invisible; we will draw trees and build nests; we will learn to identify species of plants and birds in order to identify other inhabitants of our cities; we will focus on the senses through which we perceive architecture and its surroundings: the close relationship between sound and space, between touch and the texture of materials; we will take a look at the city through a magnifying glass for a detailed view of its flowers and insects; also, we will look at it from a distance to get an idea of its true size, as if in an impressionist painting. By the end of the term, we will become walking, thinking buildings in the city we would like to live in.

Third term: from April 13 to June 15
April 13: Trees and Leaves
All the knowledge and wisdom we need to build a city can be found in nature. Trees can be considered the first natural buildings: many different species live in them. Since the dawn of time, human beings have used wood for their architectural feats. Trees grow by fractal branching, iteration by iteration. In so doing, they give us information about the seasons and shield us from heat and rain.
April 20: Nests
When we look at the common tailorbird and see how it builds its nest—sowing leaves together with plant fiber to make a cradle—we wonder whether it got this skill from humans or rather if it was the other way around. The dexterity and delicacy of some creatures when it comes to building a shelter for themselves show how much animals care for their families. Inspired by them, we will build our own nest-homes.
April 27: The Forms of Sound
If you are willing to listen, buildings will talk to you. They have a lot to tell you in terms of size, location, age, materials, purpose, and residents. The voice of a building, the way in which they express themselves, is essential to understand architecture. We can relate to space not only on the basis of light, touch, or temperature, but by means of sound as well. Close your eyes and listen carefully.
May 4: A Tactful Approach
Buildings can be appreciated by means of touch too. By feeling the texture, the roughness, the temperature, and the tectonics of materials, we can learn many things about the spaces we inhabit. We just need to close our eyes and touch. In this workshop, we will make a sample book to learn a lot of interesting things about the materials used in buildings.
May 11: I Spy with My Little Eye
Drawing with your eyes can be an interesting task. It means identifying forms and shapes before the first strokes reach the paper. This can be applied to contemplating architecture. Knowledge can enhance our understanding, as well as our drawing skills. In this lab, we will take an observational approach to architecture, resorting to different dynamics and representation techniques.
May 18: A Room with a View
City buildings shelter us. A great deal of what happens in our lives takes place in them. Looking out the windows, we can learn what is going on outside. Conversely, looking in from the street, we can imagine the stories unfolding inside, knowing that every home is a world. In this workshop, we will think and talk about city buildings, and the ways people have of living in them.
May 25: Walking Buildings
In this lab, we will create in a performative way an urban environment populated by colorful buildings. Playing a fun game with props, we will become walking buildings to think about cities and the relationship between them and the natural environment.
June 1: Urban Structures
Living in cities requires not only buildings, public spaces, or natural areas. We also need structures to communicate and get around. In this lab session, we will build connecting structures for the various spaces that make the urban layout.
June 8: Networks
Until recently, communication between people took place in the streets or in other physical spaces in the city. Today, we have “digital cities,” where we have other ways of connecting that cannot be seen, but are pretty much real. In this lab session, we will play games focusing on the city we live in as a maze of networks, with zillions of nodes, connections, and intersections.
June 15: Solving the Problem
In this workshop, we will try to find the solution to some of the problems faced by people in cities. Each of us will be an expert in a particular area of the urban world: construction noise, sidewalk flooding, picnic areas nearby, and so on.

In the third term of our Architecture Lab III, we will discuss urban networks, both visible and invisible; we will draw trees and build nests.

As you swim in an underwater museum, you will meet a bunch of puzzling, magical creatures. Then you will try and find extraordinary characters in the fascinating exhibition dedicated to artist June Crespo: Vascular. Use your magical powers to create new worlds where anything can happen. Performances: Amaia Urra and Ion Munduate

Amaia Urra and Ion Munduate will come into contact with June Crespo’s Vascular, exploring the ramifications of the exhibition and the connections between sculpture and performance. Amaia will offer an adaptation of Arbusto Ardiente (Burning Bush), a performance in which reading aloud becomes a major tool for communication, whereas Ion will perform with his body in motion, in dialogue with the works on display and the architectural space hosting the exhibition.

In this session guided by Felicitas Estévez, who specializes in the conscious system for movement technique, you will discover a self-awareness technique based on the consciousness of bodily movement. In the unique atmosphere of the activity, you will experience a series of sensations and emotions that will help you connect with your true self by meandering about Vascular or wandering around June Crespo’s works. There is always something going on between a work of art and its viewer. A two-way current. A kind of dance. June Crespo has created a space where viewers can come face-to-face with her work.

Vienna-born artist Martha Jungwirth is coming to introduce her five-decade retrospective – from the 1970s to the present – at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. She will have a talk with exhibition curator Lekha Hileman Waitoller. The exhibition explores Jungwirth’s main contributions to the history of abstract art and contemporary painting.

Concerts

The Museum is staging a set of two performances from Japan competing in the 21st International Festival for Emerging Performing Artists – ACT Festival.
In the first place, a 15-minute solo dance performance by Kenji Shinohe, dancer and choreographer based in Düsseldorf, Germany, focusing on the process of “symbolizing feelings.” It will be followed by The Life of Hokusai, a 30-minute non-verbal theatrical performance by The Life of Hokusai Committee resorting to geibu – a performing art style combining dance with martial arts—to navigate the inner world of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Activity organized in the context of the TopARTE program of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Born in Germany with roots in the Czech Republic and Australia, twin brothers Josef and Jan Prasil, who make Amistat, share a bond that courses through their familial harmonies and eloquent songcraft, emphasized by individual idiosyncrasies. Their songs unfold like stories with two narrators, giving both voices space to ring out. In their songs, they show the beauty of enjoying life with beautiful people. In Colour in Life, their latest album, they pay tribute to the people we all meet along the way and the color they bring into our lives. Following their European tour, the German twins are coming to Bilbao to be part of Art &amp; Music.

Integral yoga [+15]

In the unrivaled setting of Richard Serra’s installation The Matter of Time, the Museum is offering an accessible integral yoga class for all levels, from beginner to advanced. The unique experience begins when the Museum is still closed, thus creating the special and quiet atmosphere that yoga requires.
Serra’s sculptures will be used as a source of inspiration for participants to kindly explore such powerful concepts as presence, gravity, and balance. By doing a variety of breathing exercises and trying integral yoga poses, you will find balance between mind and body, as well as a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you. The class will end with a brief meditation to give you the peace and calm you need on a Sunday.

Courses Pop Art

The online art courses of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao offer accessible yet rigorous training in key concepts and topics in the history of modern and contemporary art, addressed from current perspectives. Drawing on the participation from experts in specific fields, these courses are inspired by the Museum Collection and its dynamic exhibition program.
Pop art was an art movement characterized by a return to representation, drawing inspiration from sources in popular and commercial culture—hence the name of the movement. Emerging in Britain in the 1950s, Pop art flourished in America in the 1960s, where a sudden boom in the economy triggered the growth of consumerism. Some of the artists in the Pop art movement reacted by incorporating images from mass culture and using techniques that emulated (or parodied) industrial production. Pop art drew on billboards, commercial ads, films, television, pulp magazines, comic strips, or even shop windows.
This course offers a broad overview of the relevance of Pop art and its various manifestations in the international art scene, its main representatives, and its influence on contemporary art practices.
Objectives
This online course is aimed at:
<ul>
<li>Analyzing the keys to the most salient characteristics of Pop art, as well as the social, political, economic, and cultural background that led to its emergence and development internationally.</li>
<li>Exploring the work of the leading Pop artists, including several women, and their most iconic creations.</li>
<li>Showing the influence of Pop art on other forms of culture beyond the visual arts, e.g. music or fashion.</li>
<li>Understanding the legacy of Pop art and its influence on contemporary art from a 21st-century perspective.</li>
