San Sebastián’s Big Week

San Sebastián’s Big Week

San Sebastián’s Big Week kicks off every year with the traditional “Cañonazo” cannon shot fired from the Alderdi Eder gardens and rendering of the song, Artillero.

One of the main attractions of the Big Week is, no doubt about it, the International Fireworks Competition between companies from different parts of the world. Music also plays an important part in the festivities: music’s biggest names return to the capital of Gipuzkoa year after year. Sports too receive a great deal of attention around this time: the classic ocean swim crossing from Getaria to San Sebastián, horse racing, the beach volleyball tournament and the herri-kirolak (Basque rural sports) displays. There are also all sorts of activities for kids, or txikis in Basque, including workshops, games, 'giants and bigheads' parades, a disco and wooden firework bulls.
