Rineke Dijkstra: The Krazyhouse

11.13.2014 - 03.01.2015

The Film & Video gallery is a permanent space dedicated to video art and the moving image.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the video installation entitled The Krazyhouse (Megan, Simon, Nicky, Philip, Dee), Liverpool, UK, 2009 by Rineke Dijkstra. In it, five teenagers dance by themselves for the camera against a white backdrop and to the sound of the music of their generation. The artist met the youngsters at a Liverpool discotheque known as The Krazyhouse and filmed them at an improvised studio in the building itself. The three-quarter shots of the youngsters are intercalated with close-ups of their faces, clearly showing their expressions. The music chosen by each of those portrayed varies from pop to heavy metal and techno.

Since the 90s, Rineke Dijkstra (Sittard, the Netherlands, 1959) has been constructing a body of work focused on photography and video. Among other questions, her works analyze the relationship between the viewer and the viewed. In her production, grouped into series in order to explore each theme continuously, particular importance is held by research into portraiture, a context in which studies of teens hold an important place.
