During the first six months of 2007, gallery 103B featured a number of didactic exhibitions devoted to artworks in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection with the aim of presenting them to the public for the first time. These presentations were conceived from an educational perspective with the added value of the artists' active collaboration both in their design and production. Laboratories acquainted visitors with different aspects related to these works: the artists' working processes, their particular cultural, artistic, and intellectual references, the significance of the materials, as well as the main themes underlying each work.
The works were presented within contexts connected to the artists' creative environments, giving visitors and schoolchildren the possibility of coming closer to each artist's interests and endeavors and have a first-hand experience on contemporary art through an in-depth presentation.
These exhibitions included these works next to audio/video materials such as films on the works themselves and the artists' careers, interviews, photographs, sketchbooks, or trips. Other materials were also presented, such as drafts or preparatory sketches, tools and materials, as well as other resources to lead the visitor towards the artists' cultural, personal, and intellectual references. Laboratories complemented the didactic approach by means of educational programs including activities such as workshops for schoolchildren and university students, lectures for Members, or tours guided by the artists themselves in which they conveyed their view and creative endeavor with special emphasis on the significant relation of these artists and their works with the cultural context around the museum.
Siege I (Asedio I) comprises two pieces, the triptych providing the backdrop for the sculptural form. Both pieces invite the public to reflect, to create their own inner world, to recall a siege, thereby engaging the visitor to recreate the artist’s experience. Nature, space, and cathartic recreation center the content of this work.
