European Avant-Garde

06.24.2000 - 10.15.2000

In the early 20th century artists formed myriad associations and coalesced into a host of different movements, defending new ideals that broke more than purely aesthetic ground; collectively, such groups became known as the historic avant-garde. It was the avant-garde that spearheaded the critical rebellion against tradition-laden society and questioned the great legacy of figurative Wester art. From then on, the source and justification of art lay increasingly in mental states, rather than in the phenomenal world. European artistic movements, styles, and personalities are represented in this exhibition through works by Alexander Calder, Robert Delaunay, Lyonel Feininger, Albert Gleizes, Juan Gris, Vasily Kandinsky, Plaul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Franz Marc, Joan Miró, Amedeo Modigliani, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian, Emil Nolde, Pablo Picasso, or Joaquin Torres-Garcia, among others.
