Born on December 19.
1973
Studies at the Escuela Superior de San Carlos in Valencia, Spain, where he will earn a degree in fine arts four years later.
1975
Begins to collaborate with Victoria Civera.
1978
Begins to teach at the plastic expression department/ Departamento de Expresión Plástica of the Universidad de Cantabria in Santander. After several years of alternating between painting, photography, and photomontage, begins to concentrate on painting.
1980
Receives a grant for young artists from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
1981
Has his first solo exhibition, at the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes in Santander, and another one at Galería Ruiz Castillo in Madrid.
1982
Exhibits at Galeria del Palau in Valencia, Spain. Receives a research grant for new forms of expression from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
1983
A solo exhibition at Galería Montenegro in Madrid marks the beginning of collaboration with the gallery. The Fundación Caja de Pensiones in Madrid features Uslé's work in the exhibition Panorama de la joven pintura española, which will later travel to a number of other venues in Spain.
1984
Displays the series Los trabajos y los días. Las tentaciones del pintor at the Fundación Marcelino Botín in Santander, Galería Nicanor Piñole in Gijón, and Galería Ciento in Barcelona. Joins the faculty of plastic arts at the Universidad de Cantabria in Santander, Spain, as an associate professor. Takes part in the Bienal Nacional de Arte Ciudad de Oviedo in Oviedo, Spain.
1985
Has his first solo exhibition in the United States, entitled Currents, at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. He was selected to participate in the São Paulo Bienal. Exhibits at Galería Montenegro in Madrid, Galería Windsor Kulturgintza in Bilbao, and Galerie 121 in Antwerp.
1986
Moves to New York after receiving a grant from the Comité Conjunto Hispano- Norteamericano to further his artistic training there. Exhibits at Galería La Máquina Española in Seville and the Palacete Embarcadero in Santander.
1987
Exhibits at Galerie Farideh Cadot in Paris and again at Galería Montenegro in Madrid.
1988
Has his first solo exhibition in New York, at Farideh Cadot Gallery, and exhibits at Galería Fernando Silió in Santander.
1989
Exhibits once again at Galería Montenegro in Madrid and at Farideh Cadot in New York and Paris.
1990
Exhibits at Galerie Barbara Farber in Amsterdam.
1991
Presents the exhibition Ultramar at the Palacete del Embarcadero and Nave Sotoliva in Santander. Uslé's work is shown for the first time at Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid, where he will show his work again on several occasions during the following years. He also exhibits at Galerie Farideh Cadot in Paris.
1992
Solo exhibitions of Uslé's work are presented at Galeria Joan Prats in Barcelona, the Sala de Exposiciones at Banco Zaragozano in Saragossa, Spain, and John Good Gallery in New York. Participates in Documenta 9 in Kassel, Germany.
1993
Exhibits at Anders Tornberg Gallery in Lund, Sweden, Barbara Farber Gallery in Amsterdam, and Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid.
1994
Exhibits at Galerie Bob van Orsouw in Zurich, Feigen Gallery in Chicago, and, together with artist Callum Innes, at Frith Street Gallery in London. Uslé's work is included in Mudanzas at Whitechapel Art Gallery in London.
1995
Exhibitions of Uslé's work are held at Robert Miller Gallery in New York, Galerie Buchmann in Cologne, and Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris.
1996
The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern in Valencia, Spain, organizes a major exhibition of Uslé's work, entitled Back and Forth. The Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona presents recent work by Uslé in the exhibition Ojo roto, which later travels to LA Louver in Los Angeles. His work is also included in a group exhibition at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Nuevas abstracciones . Exhibits at Galerie Buchmann in Basel and Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid.
1997
Exhibits at Cheim & Read in New York, Timothy Taylor Gallery in London, Galerie Bob van Orsouw in Zurich, and, together with Victoria Civera, at Galeria Camargo Vilaça in São Paulo.
1998
Galerie Franck+Schulte in Berlin holds an exhibition of Uslé's recent paintings.
1999
Shows his work at Cheim & Read in New York, Galerie Buchmann in Cologne, Galería Estiarte in Madrid, and, together with Victoria Civera, at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp.
2000
Exhibitions of Uslé's work take place at LA Louver in Los Angeles; Centro Cultural Casa del Cordón in Burgos, Spain; Palacio de los Condes de Gabia in Granada; and Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander, Centro Cultural Caja de Cantabria in Santander.
2001
The Fundação de Serralves in Porto holds a show of Uslé's work entitled Quartos escuro e amarello.
2002
Awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports. Juan Uslé First Time is mounted at the Städtisches Museum Leverkusen Schloß Morsbroich in Leverkusen, Germany. Exhibits works on paper at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp. Also exhibits at Cheim & Read in New York and Galerie Ghislaine Hussenot in Paris.
2003
The retrospective exhibition Open Rooms opens at the Palacio de Velázquez, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and travels the following year to the Fundación Marcelino Botín in Santander, the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent, Belgium, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
2004
Exhibits at Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid.
2005
Exhibits, together with Victoria Civera, at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp. Takes part in the 51st Biennale di Venezia.
2006
Frith Street Gallery in London and Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid organize an exhibition of Uslé's work.
2007
Presents sixty-five works under the title Switch on/Switch off at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga in Málaga, Spain. Exhibits at Galerie Thomas Schulte in Berlin and Galería Zoom in Santander, Spain.
2008
Presents the exhibitions Ojo-nido at LA Louver in Los Angeles and Brezales at Cheim & Read in New York.
2009
Presents the exhibitions Mataladas at Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid and La novia de Belchite at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium.
2010
Work exhibited in Spain and Germany at Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, Palma de Mallorca, and at Galerie Thomas Schulte, Berlin.
